Why Should You Reset Your AC Unit After a Power Outage?

If you are in the St. Augustine, FL area, you know that power outages are not a common occurrence, yet they can happen during thunderstorms and harsh weather. While they force you to sit around in the dark and wait for power to be restored, they also allow your home to heat up and get humid until power is back. For many homeowners, it often comes as a surprise when the power returns, but the air conditioning system remains silent. Rather than calling for an AC repair immediately, you may need to just reset the AC any time the power goes out.

  • Though all systems and installations vary, there is usually a standard set of procedures that can get the system back up and running after a power outage without also picking up the phone to book an AC repair. Let’s take a quick look at what you should do if you find yourself in a hot and sticky house once the power returns.
  • Use the thermostat to turn off the air conditioning. You may have a digital panel, and all you need to do is turn it off the system. If you cannot, just move on to the next step.
  • One of the most common issues in AC repair comes when a power surge causes the unit’s circuitry to overload. This kicks off the breaker or “trips” it. That means it has to be reset from the home’s main circuit breaker box. Click on the switch that belongs to AC unit and ensure it is fully on.
  • Give it 30 minutes. Yes, you have to use a bit of patience now as it usually takes the AC unit a bit of time to reset its internal circuitry after the outage. This can seem like hours if your house has gotten very hot, but you must leave the thermostat “Off” to prevent the unit from trying to turn on when it is not yet ready to run.
  • After that 30 minutes, turn your thermostat to the “cooling” option and the unit will come back on. Keep it around five degrees below the actual temperature so that it can work a bit more efficiently.

What should you do if that doesn’t work? That means you need professional AC repair, and the experienced team at Howard Services is ready to help.

"Professionalism is First-Rate"

My company has used Howard Services for over 15 years performing commercial air conditioner preventative maintenance and replacement. Their service and professionalism continues to be first-rate.

Recently we had to replace a cooling tower and the job was performed over a weekend.  Howard Services worked around the bank’s concern to not affect customer service during working hours.  The job was completed on time and with minimal follow-up to calibrate the system.

I have no reservations in recommending Howard Services to perform HVAC services to any company.
